After its big theatrical release, Denis Villeneuve’s film Dune made a big splash in the industry as it immediately received an overwhelming majority of positive reviews from fans and critics. But beyond the film’s success, the director believes Dune Part Two will be even more amazing.
In a new interview with Empire, Villeneuve discussed everything from the details of Dune to the upcoming sequel, which begins filming in July 2023. While Dune was left with an open ending0, it also laid out a variety of storylines and characters that many fans, including Villeneuve himself, are thrilled with. The director stated:
The second part will be a kind of cinematic delight. While filming the first part, I just set the table, you know? And explained the culture and history of all the different planets and civilizations. And now that everything is ready, I have a chance that the second part will be just an amazing playground. It will be so much fun.
Villeneuve’s comments came shortly after he said in a recent interview that Dune: Part Two would be more interesting and more cinematic. While not much is known about the plot, what is known is that composer Hans Zimmer has already come up with about 90 minutes of new music for the upcoming film to help Villeneuve with the script, as the director is already actively working on the script. “Now I am writing the second part, and it seems to me that I am again eight years old,” – said Villeneuve in August.
For the first time, Villeneuve will be filming a sequel to his own film. The award-winning filmmaker is sure to create something truly impressive and memorable. While Dune was 2 hours and 35 minutes long, the film was just beginning to probe the surface and explore the desert planet of Arrakis.
Dune: Part Two is slated for release on October 20, 2023.
